Constitution - Chronic Diseases & Aging Initiative JHSPH

Description: Chronic diseases and aging are a major public health concern worldwide and are the focus of numerous research projects in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). The Chronic Diseases and Aging Initiative (CDAI) is a student-led interest group that aims to bring together students and researchers from multiple departments in the JHSPH to learn and share experiences with experts in the field. The CDAI  was founded in 2013 by a team of JHSPH graduate students led by Mariana Socal, a PhD student in the department of International Health. Membership is open to all students and post-doctoral fellows of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The CDAI was created thanks to a grant from the JHU Alumni Association; most of its funding currently comes from the JHSPH Student Assembly.

The CDAI traditionally organizes seminars and lectures exploring the multiple aspects of chronic diseases and aging. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: physical, social and cognitive activity, disability, multi-morbidity, health disparities, health financing, and other public health challenges, in the context of chronic diseases in general as well as specific diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative diseases and others. In addition, the CDAI organizes events to raise awareness of topics related to chronic diseases and aging, such as the Healthy Aging Photo Competition (yearly organized since spring 2014) and the World Cancer Day (yearly organized since February 2015).

Mission: to promote multidisciplinary discussion around chronic diseases, aging and public health among students and faculty from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and affiliated schools.

Aims: The student group’s purpose is to fill a demand from public health students who have expressed a growing interest in the field of chronic diseases. Overall, the group aims to create a channel for students to contribute to preventing and controlling chronic diseases through advocacy, research and public heath practice.
