Healthy Aging Photo Competition & Research on Aging Poster Schowcase: Winners Announcement Event

On Friday April 22 the CDAI and our sister group GIG held their simultaneous displays of posters showcasing research on aging from across Hopkins and University of Maryland, and pictures reflecting Healthy Aging around the world.

Here are some pictures from the event:

Mariana Socal, CDAI's president, and Jimmy Le, GIG's president, explain the competition goals and get ready to announce the winners. So much expectation!

Sheldon Hall was packed with students, post-docs, and faculty  presenting their work. 12 judges were circulating and analyzing the presentations. Although this was a competition, the overall feeling was of celebration. It certainly helped to have good munchies and beautiful, inspiring pictures being displayed in the background!

The prizes are great and also super cute! Amazon gift cards to the grand prize winners. Many thanks to our sponsor, the Hopkins Center on Aging and Health.

And the winner is.....

Mariana and Jimmy congratulating Yiwei Xu, the second prize winner. Yiwei's pictures showing how the Chinese elderly have adapted to changing times caught the judge's attention.

The grand prize went to Vanessa Burrowes - in the center. Vanessa portrayed a good-humored 77-year old Baltimore resident. His important advice to healthy aging is to forget about how old we look, and focus on how we feel. Oh, and importantly, also he recommends flossing everyday!

Vanessa (second from left) also received a honorable mention for a picture displaying the relationship between aging and art. The third prize went to Karuna Luthra for a picture of her grandpa who is himself a huge photography afficionado.

All the winners in front of the grand prize picture. It is impossible not to smile when looking at this picture!

Thanks to all who participated in the 2016 Healthy Aging Photo Competition. We hope to see you again next year! and don't forget to floss everyday...

2016 Healthy Aging Photo Competition - Winners Announced!

Last Friday April 22 the CDAI announced the winners of the 2016 Healthy Aging Photo Competition. The theme this year was "Breaking Stereotypes".

The CDAI broke a stereotype in this announcement, as we carried it out in partnership with our sister group GIG (Gerontology Interest Group) during the GIG's Annual Research on Aging Poster Showcase. This partnership allowed us to have an afternoon of engaging research discussions while looking at inspiring and positive images of aging on the big screen! The event was a huge success. Our winners were in attendance and their accomplishment was greatly celebrated. See the pictures below!

On March 23, 3016 the CDAI launched the 3rd edition of the JHU university-wide photo contest focusing on Healthy Aging.

This year the competition is focused on a new theme: BREAKING STEREOTYPES.

The previous editions, launched in 2014 and 2015, were an immense success. Pictures from around the world were submitted by Johns Hopkins staff, faculty and students, with themes ranging from family ties, community, work and hobbies, art, and celebration of life.

This year we have the generous support of the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health. We hope to repeat the huge success of the previous editions in 2016!

See the rules and regulations below:

Baltimore City Health Commissioner and former Maryland Secretary of Health talk to JHSPH students about public health policy

This morning the JHSPH MPH class received the visit of Dr. Leana Wen, Baltimore City Health Commissioner and John Colmers, former Maryland Secretary of Health. Both spoke passionately about their experiences in public health practice as part of the "Public Health Policy" course led by Dr. Gerard Anderson.

While Colmers focused on politics and policy-making, Wen spoke about patient case studies and about the heroin overdose epidemic in Baltimore. Learning from professionals with on-the-ground experiences and true passion for public health was very inspiring. Even though the speakers did not address the problem of chronic diseases in detail, students brought up the issue through questions about food deserts, the importance of appropriate housing, educational interventions, and others.

Great job JHU students, we hope you keep encouraging our public health leaders to get more engaged in Chronic Diseases and Aging!

Healthy Aging Winners Announcement Event

Usama Bilal, a PhD student in Epidemiology and CDAI founding member, was the Master of Ceremony for the event that gathered an enthusiastic crowd at the JHSPH gallery on April 25th, 2015, and announced the 2015 Healthy Aging Photo Competition Winners.

The event was timed to follow the Aging Poster Showcase promoted by our sister group, Gerontology Interest Group (GIG), which was also a major success. Sweet treats and coffee (and the perspective of winning an iPad!) helped keep everyone awake on a Friday afternoon.

Htet Nay Lin Oo, who was a third-place finalist in last year's competition, got the first prize this time, together with a honorable mention. Htet shared some words about the Senior Center in Myanmar where he took the winning pictures. Htet not only has an amazing talent for photography. He is also greatly committed to improving the lives of elderly people in his home country. Great job Htet! Congratulations!!

Before the winners' announcement,  the CDAI thanked our 2015 panel of judges: Dean Mike Ward of JHSPH Student Affairs, Prof. Gilbert Burnham of the Department of International Health, Nidhi Bouri, a JHSPH Alumna and Professional Photographer, Jasma Rucker, a member of the JHSPH Student Assembly, and Nicholas Fancourt, a member of the Chronic Diseases & Aging Initiative!

Crowd gathers in front of the JHSPH Wall of Wonder in expectation of the winning images.

This portrait of an adorable Peruvian lady gets Michelle Ferng the second prize: an e-Reader!

Htet Nay Lin Oo receives the grand prize for the portrait of a singing lady from Myanmar.
